* Oompa Loompa *
This week 5 years ago, I took a very sad photograph of an empty playground without any children in the first few weeks of the Covid crisis. No-one had any idea what was going on and what was ahead of us. It resonates this week, with all the scaremongering taking place.
The world is in a mess and the news outlets in every form love to tell us. It is tainted with bitterness and fear. The papers, radio, internet are full of doom and gloom with clickbait headlines to draw us in and depress us.
Then as now, what can I do for myself?
I personally cannot change the situation but I can take charge of my own response.
Look after your own mental and physical health.
Limit your screen time and doomscrolling. Be aware of what is going on but realise you are powerless to affect it.
Nothing has changed.
Going for a run is tariff free.
The barriers on the Greenway are to stop traffic only, you can glide around them.
I went for a cycle with a lovely friend yesterday and the birds were still singing the same melodic songs.
People smiled and said hello to one another and no one asked what country you are from in case we have to impose a levy on you.
I had to put air in a tyre with a pump ‘Made in USA’ and the air came out with any extra charge.
The only territorial dispute I encountered was between 2 blackbirds on a bush.
The sun was shining for our Horsebox Coffee stop (thanks Zita in Mogeely) and we chatted the cares away.
The Dungourney river flowed along the Greenway, through the Shanty and on towards Midleton to feed the Distillery. I smiled to myself. There will be whiskey..
Folks mind yourself and be careful. Exercise and fresh air was never more important. You don’t have to kill yourself, you just need to get out and move in whatever way suits you best.
We had practice at this 5 years ago of the world turning upside down and we survived. Remember the lessons you learnt then on self-preservation.
It would take more than one lunatic to finish me. I have survived a fair few already. Be nice to everyone and you can’t go wrong.
This too shall pass…….
The weather has been fantastic recently so when going out don’t forget some sunscreen. If you are feeling a bit pale after the winter then by all means put on the fake tan, but be careful and don’t overdo it. Looking like an Oompa Loompa is not a desirable look at the moment. 😡
And, if I have to drink Jameson from now on and no more Jack Daniels then I will survive a happy man.
Have a lovely weekend
